Cold winter drives call for a properly heated cabin. When you turn on the heater and get everything but hot air, you have a problem with your car’s heater. Most of these problems involve the heater core – a small radiator that’s responsible for warming the cabin. Some of the signs you have a faulty heater core include the absence of heat, the presence of cold air, foggy windows, odd smells, and a coolant leak. What Your Check Engine Light Means

1. No Heat

One of the most obvious signs there’s a problem with your vehicle’s heater is the lack of heat when you turn on the climate control system. One of the reasons for this could be a clogged heater core. A heater core is responsible for circulating hot coolant throughout the vehicle. If it's clogged, little to no heat will come through the vents.

2. Cold Air

Another clear indication there’s a problem with your vehicle’s heater core is the presence of cold air, even with a warm engine. This heater core is responsible for heating the air that comes through your car's vents, a process it can’t complete if it malfunctions. Instead of the warming presence of hot air, you’ll be stuck with a chilly breeze.

3. Foggy Windows

Foggy windows aren’t new to drivers in the winter. Activating the defrost setting on the climate control system usually takes care of the issue to present clear visibility. If you find the function isn’t working as it should, and your windows remain foggy, the heater core has likely malfunctioned. A faulty heater core can also cause moisture to build up on your windshield through a leak.

4. Sweet Smell

If you notice a sweet smell in your vehicle’s cabin that isn’t usually there, it could be the result of a coolant leak from the heater core. The smell comes from the coolant and is a clear indicator the heater core is damaged. If you use sweet-smelling car freshening products, make sure the smell isn’t coming from there.

5. Coolant Leak

Another sign of a failing car heater is coolant leaks. You might find puddles of the solution on the passenger side door and areas of wet carpeting. This could also be the problem if you find yourself constantly having a low coolant level.
